Airtel Malawi plans K50-60 billion investment to improve services

Airtel Malawi Plc says it plans to invest between K50 billion and K60 billion to improve its network and digital services.

The company’s Managing Director, Aashish Dutt made the remarks on Friday in Lilongwe when Airtel Malawi Plc officially opened a new retail outlet at the Area 10 Ekhaya Shopping Complex.

The shop is Airtel’s third new launch this year, following outlets in Mzuzu’s Hope Square in May and Lilongwe’s Area 12 in June.

Aashish Dutt announced plans for a major investment in the company’s network infrastructure.

“Malawi is a growing country and we are planning to invest MK50 billion to MK60 Billion into improving the network services to the community. Our coverage has been expanded and we plan to add 100 more towers to improve the services to even our customers in rural areas,” he said.

He tied the investment directly to the company’s retail expansion strategy.

“We have to be the most trusted brand, and that’s why we are investing in shops, and we need to do more to improve the network and digital services. We are opening these world-class shops to increase our reach to customers.

“At Airtel, we are continuously investing in bringing our services closer to our customers. The opening of our Area 10 Complex shop reflects our commitment to delivering a seamless and convenient customer experience. Positioned at the heart of a vibrant commercial hub, this outlet will make it easier for businesses, residents and the wider community to access the connectivity and financial solutions they need to grow and thrive.”

Airtel is expanding its retail footprint nationwide as the company has also earmarked 42 existing shops for renovation, with three refurbished outlets already unveiled in Lilongwe and Mzuzu.

For local businesses in particular, the shop offers merchant support for Airtel Money, business account services, and cash deposit and withdrawal facilities.

Lilongwe City Deputy Mayor, Trizah Silo, welcomed the investment, describing it as an important contribution to the city’s continued growth and digital transformation.

She said, “The opening of Airtel Malawi’s new shop at Area 10 Ekhaya Shopping Complex will improve access to quality digital and financial services while supporting businesses, entrepreneurs and residents.

“Investments such as this contribute to creating a smarter, more connected and business-friendly city, while promoting digital inclusion and local economic growth.”

Beyond convenience for customers, Airtel says the new outlet is expected to create jobs and support small and medium-sized enterprises by widening their access to digital financial tools — while also encouraging more Malawians to adopt cashless ways of transacting.

The launch fits into Airtel Malawi’s broader retail modernization strategy, which runs alongside continued investment in network expansion and improved 4G and 5G coverage nationwide.
