Former adult film actress Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, popularly known as Amaranta Hank, has been sworn in as a senator in Colombia after winning a seat in the country’s March parliamentary elections.
Omaña will represent the Norte de Santander region in the Senate as a member of the left-wing Historic Pact coalition for the 2026 to 2030 legislative term after the coalition secured 25 Senate seats in the election.
The former journalist, who later joined the adult entertainment industry, said her past should not define her ability to serve in public office.
She has pledged to advocate for greater legal recognition and protection of people working in the adult entertainment industry, while also prioritising mental health and the prevention of sexual abuse during her tenure.
Responding to criticism following her election, Omaña questioned why a woman with a background in the adult film industry should be barred from holding elected office.
Her swearing-in comes after an earlier controversial appointment as a deputy minister in Colombia’s Ministry of Equality under President Gustavo Petro, a move that sparked widespread public debate.
