Inflation drops to 21.1% as Mutharika government’s economic measures show progress

The year-on-year inflation rate has dropped to 21.1 percent in June 2026, marking the second consecutive monthly decline under President Peter Mutharika’s administration as the government continues implementing measures aimed at stabilising the economy.

According to the latest Consumer Price Indices released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), inflation fell by 2.3 percentage points from 23.4 percent recorded in May 2026, driven mainly by a significant slowdown in food prices.

Food inflation declined to 14.7 percent from 17.6 percent, while non-food inflation eased to 32.1 percent from 33.0 percent.

The report also shows that the national month-to-month inflation rate increased slightly to 0.1 percent from negative 0.2 percent in May.

Food prices recorded a smaller monthly decline of 0.3 percent, while non-food prices rose by 0.7 percent.

RIn urban areas, monthly inflation stood at negative 0.2 percent due to lower food prices, while rural areas recorded a 0.3 percent increase, largely driven by higher non-food prices.

The latest figures provide a positive signal for the Mutharika administration as it pursues policies aimed at easing the cost of living and restoring macroeconomic stability.
