Judiciary calls for greater public engagement to improve access to justice

The Malawi Judiciary has urged members of the public to engage directly with courts and share their experiences with the justice system, saying public feedback is critical to improving service delivery and strengthening confidence in the institution.

Speaking during the 2026 Judiciary Open Day at St. Augustine 3 Primary School in Senior Chief Mponda’s area in Mangochi, Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda said the Judiciary is committed to continue being more open, transparent, accountable and people-centred through regular interaction with citizens.

“We want people to hear directly from us about how the Judiciary operates rather than relying on unofficial sources,” said Mzikamanda.

“Our officials are available to answer questions and clarify issues relating to the administration of justice.”

He said the Open Day is designed to dispel misconceptions about court operations while reminding Malawians that every citizen has a constitutional right to access justice on an equal basis before the law.

Mzikamanda also acknowledged the backlog of court cases but said the Judiciary is implementing several measures to reduce delays, including expanding court circuits, promoting electronic courts, constructing new court infrastructure and taking justice services closer to rural communities.

He further cautioned against inaccurate public commentary on judicial matters, saying misinformation can undermine the reputation and integrity of the Judiciary.

Held under the theme “Access to Justice: The Right,” this year’s Judiciary Open Day brought together members of the public, the Malawi Police Service, the Independent Complaints Commission, school learners and other justice sector stakeholders for exhibitions, legal awareness sessions and interactive discussions aimed at improving access to justice.

Senior Chief Mponda commended the initiative, saying it has helped people understand their legal rights and where to seek justice, while pledging to work with the Judiciary to encourage communities to report grievances through the courts.
