MUBAS urges students, journalists to embrace excellence in honour of Grey James Mang’anda

The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) has urged journalists, academics, students and other professionals to embrace quality and excellence, drawing inspiration from the life and career of late veteran journalist Grey James Mang’anda.

MUBAS Deputy Vice Chancellor Ishmael Kossam made the call during the launch of Mang’anda’s autobiography, “Images of My Journalism Story,” at the university’s Main Campus in Blantyre.

Kossam said Mang’anda’s professional journey provides important lessons for people aspiring to make a meaningful contribution to society, particularly through their work.

He urged journalists and academics to uphold high standards in their respective fields and emulate Mang’anda’s commitment to quality.

“People should embrace quality and excellence like the late Grey James Mang’anda. Journalists, academia and many others should emulate him,” said Kossam.

The autobiography documents Mang’anda’s experiences and journey in journalism, highlighting key moments in a career that saw him rise to the position of Director of Information.

Gazette Media lead consultant, Macdonald Chapalapata, said supporting the publication was important because it gives journalists an opportunity to reflect on Mang’anda’s experiences and the challenges he overcame throughout his career.

“We need to reflect on what Mang’anda faced and how he overcame the challenges. Remember, he rose to the post of Director of Information,” said Chapalapata.

Mang’anda’s firstborn daughter, Mwai Mang’anda Nyasulu, expressed delight at the gesture to honour her father through the autobiography.

Chairperson of the book launch taskforce, Thom Khanje, described the autobiography as an essential resource for anyone interested in Malawi’s journalism history.

Khanje said Mang’anda made a significant contribution to the promotion of free and independent journalism in the country.

“You can’t mention journalism without Grey James Mang’anda. His contribution to the free press, independent journalism and many more was significant. He was a star. He was a man of quality,” he said.

The autobiography, “Images of My Journalism Story,” is available at Claim Mabuku for K60,000.
