Standard Bank’s digital push, community investment earn twin industry awards

Standard Bank Malawi has secured two industry awards, with its growing investment in digital banking and community development earning recognition at the Global Banking and Finance Awards 2026.

The Malawi Stock Exchange-listed bank has been named Best Bank for Digital Services Malawi 2026 and Best CSI Initiative Malawi 2026, adding to a string of recent accolades received by the institution.

The digital banking award recognises Standard Bank’s expansion of services designed to give customers greater convenience and access to banking services beyond traditional branches.

Through platforms including the 247 App, 247 USSD, 247 Online, Enterprise Online, Business Online and Kwacha Point, the bank says customers can access banking services around the clock.

Standard Bank Chief Executive Officer Phillip Madinga says the recognition demonstrates the bank’s focus on using innovation to make banking more accessible while ensuring its investments have a wider social impact.

“These awards reflect our commitment to driving Malawi’s growth through both innovation and purpose-led impact. As we continue to transform the banking experience through digital solutions, we are equally committed to investing in initiatives that improve lives and strengthen communities,” said Madinga.

The second award highlights Standard Bank’s corporate social investment, particularly its support towards the renovation of the maternity wing at Zomba Central Hospital.

The project is aimed at improving maternal healthcare infrastructure at one of Malawi’s key referral hospitals, which serves an estimated 4.6 million people across six districts, receives referrals from 35 health centres and handles about 630 deliveries every month.

Madinga says the investment reflects the bank’s view that its responsibility goes beyond providing financial services.

“We believe our role extends beyond banking. Our investment in the Zomba Central Hospital Maternity Wing reflects our commitment to supporting critical healthcare infrastructure that improves the lives of mothers, newborns and families,” he said.

The latest recognition comes shortly after Standard Bank Group, Africa’s largest bank by assets, received recognition from Euromoney, with Standard Bank Malawi among the group’s operations to receive international recognition.

For Standard Bank Malawi, the twin awards underline an approach that combines technological innovation with community-focused investment, as the bank seeks to position itself not only as a financial services provider but also as a contributor to Malawi’s broader development.

Madinga says the recognition also reflects the confidence placed in the bank by its customers, employees, partners and communities, adding that it will motivate Standard Bank to continue developing solutions and initiatives that contribute to the country’s growth.

The bank continues to anchor its strategy on its purpose: “Malawi is our home, we Drive her Growth.”
