Lake of Stars organisers promise bigger festival

Organisers of the 2026 Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival say preparations for this year’s event are at an advanced stage, with more than 70 artists expected to perform during the three-day celebration of music, arts and culture.

Speaking to Capital FM, Festival Director Sharmila Elias-Taijala said this year’s festival will build on the success of previous editions by providing an inclusive platform that celebrates Malawian creativity while promoting tourism and local economic development.

She said the festival, to be held at Fish Eagle Bay Lodge in Nkhotakota, will feature a diverse programme including live music, fashion, traditional dance, visual arts, cinema, workshops, panel discussions, circus performances, children’s activities and beach sports.

“We’re thrilled with how everything is coming together. This year’s edition promises another unforgettable celebration of Malawian arts, culture and creativity while showcasing one of the country’s most beautiful destinations,” said Elias-Taijala.

According to the organisers, this year’s line-up will include headline performances from Driemo, Madalitso Band and Maggie Kadrum, alongside dozens of other artists from Malawi and abroad.

Beyond entertainment, Elias-Taijala said the festival continues to create economic opportunities for communities in Nkhotakota through increased business for accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators, market vendors and other small enterprises.

She added that organisers are also implementing community development initiatives, including the Khalani O’Masuka homestay programme, which allows local families to host visitors, creating additional income while promoting cultural exchange.

The festival will also feature the Mbalame Village Inclusive Football Tournament, inspired by Malawian football star Temwa Chawinga, as well as the Day of Ideas Youth Festival, which aims to empower secondary school students through discussions on leadership, climate action, artificial intelligence, science, technology and the creative industries.

Elias-Taijala further said organisers are working closely with government authorities, security agencies, healthcare providers and community leaders to ensure adequate safety and security measures are in place throughout the event.

She also highlighted the festival’s commitment to environmental conservation through responsible waste management and the use of recycled and locally sourced materials, some of which are later repurposed into desks and furniture for nearby schools and health facilities.

The Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival has been hosted in several lakeshore districts over the years, including Nkhata Bay, Salima and Mangochi, before moving to Nkhotakota, where organisers say it has continued to contribute to tourism growth and community development.
