Scorchers’ WAFCON qualification highlights growing role of corporate support

The Malawi Scorchers’ qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals is highlighting the growing role of corporate partnerships in supporting the country’s national teams.

This is the focus of the latest edition of TheOMGbrief, a newsletter published by Malawi-based Outreach Media Group, which examines the Scorchers’ WAFCON journey and their partnership with National Bank of Malawi (NBM).

The article, titled “NBM, Scorchers and the WAFCON Bet,” explores how corporate backing can complement sporting efforts while creating opportunities for businesses to connect with national pride and major sporting moments.

NBM’s partnership with the Scorchers places the bank among companies supporting the national women’s team as it prepares for the continental tournament.

Beyond the team’s qualification, the article examines the broader relationship between sport and the corporate sector, including how businesses can contribute to the development of national teams while benefiting from associations with successful sporting campaigns.

Outreach Media Group founder Jasper Phiri says the publication was established to address what he considers an information gap that affects decision-making among Malawians.

“I started Outreach Media Group with one conviction: the information gap is the single biggest reason talented people in Malawi fail,” Phiri says.

He says the publication was inspired by instances where capable people made costly decisions because they lacked access to relevant information, analysis and context.

According to Phiri, TheOMGbrief seeks to simplify complex financial and economic issues so that they can be understood by a wider audience and used to make informed decisions.

“Every edition takes a complex financial or economic story and breaks it down into something a non-specialist can read in six minutes and act on,” he says.

Although business and economic issues are central to the newsletter, its coverage also includes finance, lifestyle, personal growth, sports and culture.

The Scorchers-NBM partnership therefore provides an opportunity to examine a sporting achievement through a wider business and corporate lens.

TheOMGbrief is published every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and covers stories from Malawi and across Africa.
