EFM Urges Government to Deliver on 2025 Campaign Promises

The Economic Freedom Movement (EFM), a non-governmental organization, has urged the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-led government to fulfill the promises it made to Malawians during the 2025 general election campaign.

EFM President Precious Chikopa made the remarks on Saturday during a press briefing in Lilongwe, saying that despite collecting substantial revenue through the Malawi Revenue Authority, Roads Authority, and city councils, the government has failed to address key challenges facing Malawians in education, health, agriculture, and other sectors.

Chikopa, who took over from the late Joseph Peshi as EFM president, said the government should not ask Malawians for more time to fulfill its promises, noting that the DPP had governed before and therefore knows what is required to restore the country’s economy.

On education, EFM called on the government to construct additional classrooms, employ more teachers to reduce the teacher-student ratio to 1:40, and provide adequate learning materials. Chikopa also urged the government to consider lowering university tuition fees.

On agriculture, EFM said the government should allow greater private investment in mega farms and promote farm mechanization to boost productivity, citing Napoleon Dzombe as an example of successful large-scale farming.

On health, Chikopa called on the government to revisit its monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, train more specialists, and construct additional health centers to address the challenges Malawians continue to face.

Meanwhile, President Peter Mutharika, speaking before his departure for South Africa earlier this week, said his administration’s efforts to restore the country’s economy are on the right track and that he remains committed to fulfilling his campaign promises.
