Mutharika mourns MBC Director General Brian Banda

President Peter Mutharika has described the late Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General Brian Banda as a distinguished media personality and dedicated public servant.

In a condolence message, President Mutharika says he and the First Lady are deeply saddened by Banda’s sudden death, describing him as a patriot whose voice and vision resonated with Malawians for decades.

Mutharika has extended condolences to Banda’s family, friends and the wider media fraternity, saying his death is a significant loss to the country.

Banda, who served as MBC Director General until his death, was also a veteran broadcaster who held several influential positions in Malawi’s media industry.

He worked at Capital FM, Times Group and served as press officer for two former presidents, Joyce Banda and Lazarus Chakwera.

Meanwhile, the funeral programme released by MBC indicates that Banda’s body will be taken from Mthunzi Mortuary at 11:00am on Sunday, August 9, 2026, to Word of Faith Church in Chilobwe, Blantyre, where a church service will be held.

He will then be laid to rest on Monday, August 10, 2026, at M’banda Village in Chileka, a few kilometres after Bakili Muluzi International Airport in Blantyre.

The MBC Director General’s death has triggered messages of condolences from across the country, particularly from the media fraternity and public figures who worked with him during his career.
