FAM denies abandoning Scorchers players after airport arrival

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says Malawi’s senior women’s national football team, the Scorchers, were not abandoned after pictures circulated on social media showing some players waiting for transport to their respective homes.

In a media release dated October 15, 2026, FAM said transport arrangements had been made for all players upon their arrival at Bakili Muluzi International Airport and Kamuzu International Airport.

However, the association said some players opted to be dropped off at designated stages, where they preferred to arrange their own transport to their respective homes.

FAM said the players were therefore not abandoned, as transport had already been provided for their safe movement from the airports.

The association added that, under its Football Transformation Agenda, it remains committed to prioritising the welfare, safety and well-being of players and other key stakeholders.

FAM further said it would continue to ensure that appropriate logistical arrangements are made for national teams during official assignments.
