Football Association of Malawi has secured two friendly matches for the Malawi women’s football team against heavyweight, Morocco and Ghana as part of preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The team arrived in Morocco on Tuesday ahead of the tournament which they are kicking off with the defending champions, Nigeria on 28 this month.
The team has arrived in Morocco with almost two weeks to go before the campaign starts and the association has announced the development that the team will face the hosts in a friendly match on 16th July, 2026.
The Association has also announced that the team will also face Ghana in another friendly match on 23 July in Mohammedia.
The team’s head coach Lovemore Fazili says the Scorchers are ready for their first ever WAFCON campaign and targets to get out of the group.
“We are geared for the tournament and being out first appearance, the target for now is to get out of the group and then take it step by step and see how far we can go,” he said.
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya said the main target at the tournament is to reach the semifinals and qualify for the World Cup.
“We believe that we have supported the team with what we could have done. We are hopeful that this team will perform and our target is to reach the semifinals and we want to qualify for the World Cup,” he said.
Fazili adds three new players to the squad
The head coach has included three players that he had dropped from from his initial 23-player squad.
According to FAM, Chisomo Banda, Lyna James and Tendai Sani have been recalled by the coach to join the team.
The three players are expected to leave the country on July 17 to join the team in Morocco.
Meanwhile, Temwa Chawinga who plays in America will arrive in Rabat on 20th July.
Malawi were drawn in group C with the Copper queens, Zambia, the Cleopatras of Egypt and the Super Falcons of Nigeria.
The team will start the dream campaign with a tough match against Nigeria on July 28 at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat at 21:00 CAT before facing Egypt on August 1 at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, kicking off at 18:00.
They will finish off the group phase with their neighbors, Zambia on August 5 in the same city, kicking off at 21:00.
