Foreign boat reported missing on Lake Malawi

A Tanzanian-registered speedboat, Makutuwima Cruise, powered by two 90-horsepower Yamaha outboard engines and belonging to businessman Andrew Makutuwima Nyirenda, has been reported missing on Lake Malawi after departing Mbamba Bay, Tanzania, for Nkhata Bay, Malawi.

According to Senior Assistant Surveyor of Vessels in Nkhata Bay, Chikosa Mkandawire, authorities received a report from the boat owner indicating that the vessel left Mbamba Bay between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Mkandawire said Malawi authorities were only notified after the vessel failed to arrive at its expected time in Nkhata Bay and no communication had been received from those on board.

“It is reported that the boat was carrying seven people, comprising four whites and three crew members. Of the crew, two are Malawians while one is a Tanzanian. It is suspected that the vessel may have developed a mechanical fault while on the lake, although the exact cause of its disappearance has not yet been established,” he said.

He added that search and rescue efforts are currently underway to locate the missing vessel and its occupants.

“According to the law, the Port Master in Malawi is supposed to be notified at least 24 hours before departure, which did not happen. We appeal to members of the public, particularly fishermen, boat operators and lakeshore communities, to report any sighting of the vessel or its occupants to the nearest marine or security authorities to assist the ongoing search operation and more updates will be provided as additional information becomes available,” added Mkandawire.
