Government dismisses reports of Mutharika’s alleged trip to India

Government has dismissed as false reports that President Arthur Peter Mutharika has travelled to India from South Africa for medical attention.

Chief Secretary to Government Justin Saidi has told Capital FM that the President is still in South Africa.

“The President is still in South Africa,” Saidi said.

He has also urged the public to rely on credible sources of information and avoid spreading unverified reports.

The clarification follows reports circulating on social media claiming that Mutharika had travelled to India for medical attention.

The President left Malawi for South Africa on October 6, 2026, through Kamuzu International Airport on what the government described as a private visit.

The government’s announcement of the trip did not specify the reason for the visit or how long the President was expected to stay in South Africa.
