High Court hears evidence in Victoria Bobe murder case

The High Court in Blantyre has resumed hearing a murder case involving seven people accused of killing medical doctor Victoria Bobe in Chigumula, Blantyre, on 17 November 2025.

The accused are facing charges of murder, robbery and burglary in connection with the incident.

As proceedings resumed, the State presented its fourth and fifth witnesses, including Police photographer Eunice Mtewa and Detective Sergeant Winga.

Mtewa told the court that she recorded a video in which the accused allegedly explained how they carried out the crime after arriving at Bobe’s residence.

During cross-examination, defence lawyer Michael Goba Chipeta questioned Mtewa over the police video, including its originality, storage and the circumstances under which it was recorded.

Mtewa told the court that the camera used to record the video belonged to the Malawi Police Service and that the original footage was kept at her office.

She also confirmed that the accused were not informed of their right to refuse being recorded, but said they were told that the footage would be used in court.

Chipeta further challenged Mtewa over the circumstances surrounding the recording, arguing that the video appeared to show the accused surrounded by police officers and in chains, despite her testimony that they were not under arrest at the time.

Mtewa maintained that the footage she recorded presented the true circumstances surrounding the matter.

The State later called Detective Sergeant Winga, who presented photographs taken at Bobe’s residence and of her body.

Some of the photographs, which were shown privately to presiding Judge Ruth Chinangwa because of their graphic nature, included images of a human skull fragment found in the room where Bobe was allegedly killed, as well as injuries to the back and front of her head consistent with a gunshot wound.

Winga has since completed giving his evidence as the trial continues.
