The High Court of Malawi has stayed plans by the Speaker of Parliament and Parliament to establish a joint ad hoc committee to investigate alleged governance issues involving various government institutions.
The institutions include the Immigration and Citizenship Services Department, ESCOM, EGENCO, PML, Blantyre Water Board, NOCMA and other government departments, ministries and agencies.
The order follows an application for judicial review by citizen Austin Mkoka, who has been granted permission by the court to challenge the decision by the Speaker and Parliament.
The court has directed that the inter partes hearing of the application be held within 14 days, while the stay remains in force until a further order of the court.
