Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival postponed to 2027

Organisers of the Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival have announced that the 2026 edition of the event will be postponed to 2027, citing a difficult economic environment and insufficient financial backing to stage the festival at its usual scale.

In a press release issued on 3 September 2026, the festival’s organisers said the decision had not been taken lightly.

For more than two decades, Lake of Stars has served as a platform for Malawian and international artists, drawing tourists, cultural organisations and businesses to the country while contributing to the growth of Malawi’s creative economy.

Organisers pointed to rising costs, foreign exchange shortages, funding cuts and a challenging operating environment as factors that made it impossible to secure the level of sponsor and audience support needed for an event of the festival’s ambition. As an independent festival, they said, proceeding without adequate financial backing would put artists, crew, volunteers, suppliers and the wider community at unacceptable risk.

“It breaks my heart to be the bearer of bad news, but we remain optimistic and steadfast in our commitment to delivering the festival in 2027,” said Sharmila Elias-Taijala, Director of DOPE, the organisation behind the festival.

Sharmila added that the pause would give organisers an opportunity to reassess the global and domestic economic situation while staying true to the festival’s founding ethos.

All tickets already purchased for the 2026 festival will be refunded in full. Organisers said further details on the refund process, including timelines, will be shared through the festival’s official communication channels in due course. New dates for the 2027 festival will also be announced through those channels.
