Malawi Strengthens Hep B with Routine Immunization Vaccine

The Malawi Government through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has integrated Hepatitis B Vaccine into the national routine immunization programme to protect children from infection before it can take hold.

Speaking through a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministy Secretary, Dan Namarika said hepatitis B and C remain among the leading causes of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer in Malawi, with many people unaware they are infected until complications become severe.

By folding the hepatitis B vaccine into the childhood immunization schedule alongside other routine vaccines, Dr Namarika says the country has taken a decisive step toward preventing new infections at their earliest and most critical point — infancy.

“Hepatitis B spreads easily from mother to child during birth and in early childhood, vaccinating infants early closes off the pathway through which the disease has historically taken root in communities. This early intervention is credited with helping to slow transmission at a population level, reducing the future burden of chronic liver disease that often develops silently over decades,” he said.

The vaccine’s integration into routine immunization did not happen in isolation.

The Ministry noted it forms part of a broader set of measures that include expanded screening among priority populations, strengthened laboratory capacity for diagnosis, the development of national hepatitis guidelines, and the integration of hepatitis services into existing HIV, maternal, and child health programmes.

The Ministry adds that treatment access for eligible patients with chronic hepatitis B is also being scaled up as Malawi works toward eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

Despite this progress, the Ministry acknowledged that gaps remain.

Limited public awareness, stigma, low testing uptake, and unequal access to diagnostic and treatment services continue to delay diagnosis and care for many Malawians — challenges this year’s theme directly addresses through its call to “break down” barriers of stigma, unequal access, misinformation, and fragmented health services.

Beyond the immunization gains for children, the Ministry has adults who were not vaccinated in infancy — particularly those at increased risk, including healthcare workers, people living with HIV, pregnant women, household contacts of people with chronic hepatitis B, individuals requiring frequent blood transfusions, people who inject drugs, and prisoners — to seek vaccination and screening where available.

The Ministry further appealed to healthcare workers, development partners, civil society organizations, faith-based institutions, the private sector, community leaders, and the media to strengthen collaboration in raising awareness and expanding access to hepatitis services nationwide.

The government through the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030 through stronger health systems, sustained investment, and active community participation.

The World commemorates the Hepatitis B on 28th July every year and this year’s commemoration carries the theme: Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down
