MLW’s CREATOR Building named Malawi’s best construction project

The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Research Programme has won the Best Construction Project award for its Clinical Research Excellence and Training Open Resource (CREATOR) building, earning national recognition from the Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA).

The award was presented during the National Construction Day 2026 celebrations held under the theme, “People, Quality, and Innovation: Building a Legacy,” in recognition of the project’s outstanding quality, innovation and contribution to Malawi’s construction sector.

MLW says the award marks a historic milestone for the institution, validating its long-term vision of creating a world-class environment for cutting-edge health research and postgraduate specialist training in Malawi.

The institution also credited the achievement to the collaborative efforts of architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, project managers, contractors, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), and MLW’s estates team, who worked together to deliver the state-of-the-art facility.

According to MLW, the recognition strengthens the institution’s position as a leader in sustainable infrastructure development and innovation, while setting a benchmark for future construction projects in the country.

Commissioned in 2024, the CREATOR building was established to expand Malawi’s clinical research capacity, support advanced postgraduate medical training, and increase MLW’s research activities by about 30 percent over the next decade.

The facility also houses an innovation hub, modern research laboratories and digital learning spaces aimed at developing the next generation of scientists and health researchers.
