Morocco ambassador hails fearless Scorchers, highlights growing Malawi-Morocco ties

Morocco’s Ambassador to Malawi, Oumiyer Muhammad, has hailed the Malawi Scorchers for their resilience and courage after their dramatic 2-1 victory over Ghana’s Black Queens, saying their historic run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations demonstrates Malawi’s growing potential in women’s football.

The victory sent the Scorchers into the semi-finals and secured the country a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Muhammad said wins over Nigeria, Egypt and Ghana show that Malawian women can compete with Africa’s best when given opportunities and support.

Speaking earlier during the Morocco’s Throne Day celebrations at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, Muhammad highlighted what he described as the transformation of Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, who marked 27 years on the throne on July 30.

He said Morocco’s development under the King’s leadership has strengthened the country’s stability, innovation, skills development and sustainable development, while creating opportunities that can benefit its people and partners.

Muhammad said Morocco, as host of the tournament, was delighted with Malawi’s progress and remained committed to supporting the aspirations of young Malawians in sport and education.

He linked the Scorchers’ success to broader Malawi-Morocco relations, saying the two countries share a vision of a resilient, self-reliant and connected Africa.

He highlighted Morocco’s support to Malawi, including a donation of 1,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer, a planned fertilizer production plant, assistance to climate-affected communities and scholarships for Malawian students.

He said the cooperation could help strengthen Malawi’s agricultural sector, reduce dependence on imported fertilizer and deepen economic ties between the two countries.
