President Arthur Peter Mutharika has vowed to crack down on individuals and syndicates involved in the illegal smuggling of Malawi’s minerals, describing them as traitors undermining the country’s development.
Speaking during the swearing-in of newly appointed Minister of Mining Thoko Tembo at Kamuzu Palace, the President warned that his administration will pursue those illegally exploiting the country’s mineral wealth.
Mutharika said the government is determined to ensure that Malawi benefits from its natural resources through transparent and fair management of the mining sector.
He also urged the new minister to ensure mining agreements are negotiated in the country’s best interests, saying the sector has the potential to become a key driver of economic growth if properly managed.

Tembo pledged to take up the challenge, promising to work towards securing better mining deals and protecting Malawi’s mineral resources.
