The State President Peter Mutharika, and The First Lady through Beautiful Malawi (BEAM) Trust, have donated food and non-food itemws worth K100 million to 1,000 Malawians who recently returned from South Africa following xenophobic attacks.
Speaking during the symbolic handover at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza District, BEAM Trust Chairperson Dingiswayo Jere said the donation reflects the First Lady’s concern for the hardships the returnees endured while in South Africa.
Receiving the donation, Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Saidi said more than 40,000 Malawians have so far returned safely from South Africa, with more expected to arrive.
He added that the government is working with relevant stakeholders to regulate labour migration and address the increasing number of Malawians leaving the country in search of better economic opportunities.
One of the beneficiaries, Abdullah Braidon from Machinga District, urged fellow Malawians intending to travel to South Africa to postpone their plans until the security situation in the country improves.
