Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha has held discussions with International Monetary Fund (IMF) African Department Director Zeina Zeidane on Malawi’s economic reform programme and continued cooperation with the global lender.
The talks took place on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF African Caucus meeting in Banjul, The Gambia, where Mwanamvekha is attending alongside Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dr. George Partridge.
During the meeting, Zeidane commended Malawi for what she described as a positive report from the IMF’s recent mission conducted in June and assured the country of faster progress in programme negotiations after both sides agreed on the framework.
Mwanamvekha thanked the IMF for its continued engagement and support, saying the partnership remains critical in helping Malawi stabilise its economy and implement key reforms.
The IMF African Caucus brings together African finance ministers, central bank governors and senior officials to coordinate the continent’s position on key economic and financial issues ahead of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings.
