Six Malawian students have emerged as champions at the 2026 Robocorda International Robotics Competition, outclassing participants from 10 African countries.
Drawn from primary and secondary schools, the students are Anwar Bakili, Hope Jere, Inkosi Kuyeri, Alessandro Simwaka, Nathan Chilonga and seven-year-old Aiden Salima.
The competition, which took place between Thursday and Friday last week, saw Team Malawi showcase two innovations: a rover designed to tackle challenges in the mining sector and a solar-powered smart garden.
Speaking after the victory, Team Malawi coach Joan Chapweteka described their performance as exceptional, especially considering it was their maiden appearance at the event.
“It was a truly tiresome journey to achieve these results, and I am happy that they have emerged as the best team despite this being our first time participating in the competition,” said Chapweteka.
One of the participants, Anwar Bakili, said: “It feels very good to win. We were confident that we would make it. We urge the government to continue teaching us skills that will help us innovate and develop the country.”
The Robocorda International Robotics Competition, which started in 2024, brings together young innovators from across Africa to showcase their coding, robotics and STEAM problem-solving skills.
