Stakeholders Optimistic DPP Will Revive Malawi’s Cotton Industry
Stakeholders in the cotton industry are expressing optimism that the strong political will of the current Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration will help revive cotton production in the country.
President of the Tikondane Traders Import and Export Association of Malawi, Tembo John Khisimisi, says they have received assurances from the government that it will work closely with relevant stakeholders to revive cotton production and create a conducive environment for growers.
“We have assurance from the government that it wants to reclaim the lost glory of cotton by addressing the challenges affecting cotton farmers in the country,” said Khisimisi.
He cited poor coordination, low prices and unreliable payment systems as some of the factors that have contributed to the decline in cotton production.
Khisimisi added, “Most farmers complained about payments as they were duped by buyers who insisted on processing payments electronically. As a result, many farmers eventually withdrew from cotton production.”
