Debate has ensued on social media following the decision by Miss Malawi organisers to appoint 1st Princess, Ireen Navicha as Malawi’s representative at this year’s Miss World pageant instead of reigning Miss Malawi, Thandi Chisi.
The discussion follows the announcement that Navicha, 21, will represent the country at the global beauty contest to be held in Vietnam from August to September.
Responding to the debate, Miss Malawi official Godfrey Kambewa told the local media that the decision was made after careful consideration of the pageant’s trends, which he said have in recent years favoured younger contestants, particularly those aged between 18 and 25.
Kambewa also said Navicha’s advocacy work, which focuses on supporting girls who have returned to school after dropping out, aligns with the “Beauty With a Purpose” initiative, a key component of the Miss World competition that could strengthen her chances.
While the Miss World competition is open to contestants aged between 17 and 27, some social media users have questioned why the reigning Miss Malawi was not selected to represent the country.
